IN DEFENSE OF THE WEDDING WARDROBE

Wedding season is winding down, but there’s still one question worth thinking through: does one wedding really call for just one look? Fresh from getting married herself, Lara makes the case for the one occasion where more might actually be more.

Lara: There are very few occasions left that come with their own dress code, let alone an entire category of clothing. The wedding dress has become so synonymous with the day that it is almost impossible to separate the two: you get married, you buy a wedding dress. Singular. Which feels increasingly at odds with the way we dress now. It’s not uncommon to change three times in a single day. From gym clothes in the morning to something sharper for a business meeting, then into whatever you wear at home, with another adjustment if it suddenly gets too hot or too cold. We change for dinner, swap flats for heels and think nothing of dressing differently for different parts of the same day. So why should one of life’s biggest occasions be any different?

I had reason to think about this recently. Four weeks ago, for my own small 45-guest wedding, without planning it, I somehow ended up with three looks. Less the result of an elaborate bridal wardrobe strategy than a series of clothes finding their way to me at exactly the right moment...
